I bought the Hauppauge-win tv-NOVA-T usb stick 5 or 6 weeks ago.It works fine with both the supplied software (win tv v.7)and windows media centre,but ,I assume I’ll have too wait a couple of years before I can use it outdoors with my laptop as the freeview signal in my area is not strong enough yet.

I get fantastic picture quality on my laptop (I have a wall connection to a roof aerial). I’ve had the wintv usb before and the picture I was getting with the same laptop (5 years ancient) & aerial was terrible, I bought this and the quality is sooooooooo much better! It even has nice feature of being able to pause and replay live tv or record programmes to your hard drive. Brilliant buy and bargain price in comparison to getting a tv (and this also saves space). My only issue with the product is that the remote control doesn’t work.

This is the entry-level USB tuner from Hauppauge, and it just works. The WinTV software leaves a lot to be desired, but on the Windows side you have Media Center’s live TV mode which will work with the stick if you install just the drivers, or if you’re using a Mac then Elgato’s EyeTV software comes highly recommended.
I knocked a star off simply for the terrible software (though there was no problem, as I say, using it with Media Cente) and the honestly useless included aerial and remote. It’s cool that you do get a remote but it’s one of those flimsy credit-card type things and it seems a bit pointless; no-one would want to use it permanently. I don’t reckon it makes a major impact on the overall cost of the product but it just seems a waste.
But honestly, if you just need a USB tuner, this is what you want.

The WinTV -Nova -T USB stick worked well particularly when connected to a decent aerial. The supplied aerial stick was not very excellent. Also found the very slim remote control poor. But, we got excellent reception. One needs to follow the instructions carefully and it is not an intuitive set up. Brilliant value for money.
