I’ve been looking at buying this box for quite a while as I found I was missing more programs while at work. And also as ESPN has launched with late night NHL, I thought, fantastic, I can record the games and watch them at a more sensible time.

I was currently just using the freeview tuner in my Sharp Aquos TV which found all the channels available to me, including ESPN via a CAM.

Set the box up, and lo and behold, no ESPN channel, plus also a lot of channels that I used to get via my TV no longer appear. So, went on the forums, did a manual search, still no channels. Fantastic.

The other thing that was a complete let down is the EPG. Just wanted to check what was on E4 later this evening. Nothing on the EPG. Its taken 30mins to populate what is on this evening. Just turned it off and on again to see if it saves it, it doesn’t. So if you’re in a rush to record something later in the day and you’ve just switched the box on forget it.

I’m worried the box is going back. For what i need it’s completely useless and has some serious flaws.

Having read all the reviews on this box I chose to go ahead and buy one. When it arrived it was fantastic and I felt I’d entered the posh world of being able to pause a program while watching it. Very fancy!! Well it is if you don’t have things like Sky or Virgin etc. Anyway, the first morning after getting it I turned the tv on to find the screen had frozen. So I turned it off at the back and on again and all was fine. This has happened about 4 times in the first week and so I called Amazon and they are sending me out a new one which is pukka. The manual is on a DVD which is fantastic for saving trees as you don’t get millions of versions in hundreds of languages so very enviromentally friendly in that respect. But, you have to fire up a pc each time you want to refer to it which is a pain. I have called Humax (0844 6698800) and they are sending me out a paper manual for free which is fantastic. They also told me that the freezing problem is apparently due to freeview upgrades that have been happening over the recent weeks and all we need to do is download their upgrade and all will be fixed. I’m not overly sure on this one myself and look forward to the replacement from Amazon.

Huge downside for me is there is no way of setting reminders on the box. I.e. if you’re watching one program and then want it to automatically turn over for another. Pain in the butt as my ancient £30 freeview box and all others that I’ve had did do this. All that technology and they didn’t reckon of this. Shame.

I don’t really like the program guide section but it’s something I’ll probably get used to. I like to see a list of forthcoming programs for the night rather than having to scroll horizontally across each channel. As I say, it’s what you’re used to and I’m not at the moment so hopefully once time goes on I’ll get used to it.

Shame it’s not HDMI either! Still, all moans aside, I’m really pleased to have gone up in the world and the best function is the record and pause viewing especially if you’ve got kids who constantly bug you when you want to watch a program!!

Lastly, I had forgotten about all the reviews that mention how noisy the box is. All I can say on that is “What noise?”. They have obviously fixed this probalm as I have the box in my bedroom and have never noticed any noise and I have perfect hearing!!

As the title says really – my box hangs nearly daily – sometimes more – and it means the scheduled recordings hang too so you lose everything – thanks god for iPlayer and other online players as without them I would lose loads.

Picture freezes. Remote control doesn’t work properly. Series link doesn’t work.Timer doesn’t always work. You constantly have to turn it off and then turn it back on. Help line says that an update will be downloaded , but machine won’t stay on long enough for this to happen. Eventually after months of problems the download has worked and everything now seems OK

Unit was simple to set up. I live in a poor reception area, but have only had very occasional problems, unlike a previous make which was rubbish, hence the buy of this product.

The programme guide does take a few minutes to populate, but is not a huge problem.

Has frozen twice in the couple of months that I have had it, but a quick switch off and reboot fixed it.

Did’nt record a couple of programmes that I thought I had set, but that may have been my mistake.

Overall then, a excellent product for the price. Recommended.
