I’ve had my FVS114 for about 2 years and it has been very unreliable. When it locks up, which happens for no discernable reason, the only way to get it working is to switch it off and then on again. You cannot log into the web interface when it locks up and it will not even accept any pings; leaving it for half an hour or so, in the hope that it might sort itself out, is also in vain. Sometimes it will lock up repeatedly on the same web page, meaning you simply cannot visit the site, sometimes it is a one-off thing.
I had thought that perhaps it was just me, that there was something peculiar about my home network, but I have found the same problem reported by many other users on the dslreports.com forum. Some suggest downgrading to the earliest available firmware (1.1_01), but then you don’t get any of the bug fixes addressed by the later releases.
Originally, I was pleased to buy a Netgear product to go with my cable modem. My network switches are Netgear and when I had ADSL, my modem/router was one of theirs and perfectly adequate. But now, as there has been no sign of any replacement firware since May 2007, I shall be shopping for a replacement as soon as finances allow and I shan’t be buying Netgear.
