news say whales and dolphins are monitored in gulf for oil spill effects. i thought whales are only in pacific?
are there whales in the atlantic or the gulf of mexico? i know there are dolphins in the gulf, the football team is called Miami Dolphins. but are there whales?

There certainly are! I used to be involved in marine mammal rescue along the gulf coast, and some of the species we’ve found included bryde’s, sei, minke, sperm, melon-headed, and fake killer whales. There are blue whales in the gulf as well!
Also, keep in mind that the classification of an animal as either a “whale” or a “dolphin” is non-scientific. Taxonomists divide the order Cetacea into Odontocetes (toothed whales) and Mysticetes (baleen whales). So many of the animals we call “whales” (orcas, pilot whales, belugas, etc.) are really more closely related to the animals we call “dolphins.”
